Your Sister's Sister

When most normal adults see this movie's title they think, "oh this i a movie about some girl's sister". But when you show this title to a 12 year old like me, I think it's going to be like Three's Company but the Cinemax version!  Sadly after seeing the preview I quickly realized that my version was nowhere near what this movie was  actually about but my interest was still piqued.

The movie is basically about Jack( Mark Duplass) who has been dealing with the death of his brother for over a year now and still has not adjusted. He drinks heavily and is in a depressed state which makes him say  inappropriate things in the worst possible situations. And no this is not my biography. So his best friend Iris(Emily Blunt) suggests that he goes off to her father's cabin to get away from things for a while to clear his head. When he does, he finds her sister Hannah (Rosemarie Dewitt) already there going through her own issues. Well Jack and Hannah eventually hit it off after a night of heavy drinking and sleep together, in one of the funniest sex scenes since Underworld Rise of the Lycans. They both realize they made a mistake especially when Iris drives up the next morning to surprise Jack. It becomes obvious that Jack has always had a thing for Iris and after Hannah finds out that Iris also has strong felings for him, things get really  weird as they try to keep the fact that they hooked up a secret until tensions reach an all time high and yet another shady secret is revealed.

This all sounds like it could have easily been a script for a soap opera. And honestly with lesser acting it would have felt that way. But thankfully Rosemarie Dewitt does an amazing job as Hannah, making you both hate her at times with how she handles certain situations but also sympathize with her as she adjusts to just getting out of a seven year relationship. I can watch Emily Blunt grate cheese for an hour although lately it feels like she's being type cast with her latest roles in Adjustment Bureau and 5 Year Engagement. I would like to see her get roles like in Sunshine Cleaning again. And Mark Duplass shows that there's clearly more to him than what he shows in The League as he fights with finally putting himself back out there as opposed  to drowning his sorrows in liquor. The cool thing about this movie is that everyone can identify with at least one of the characters and what they are going through. So the reactions that they have in the situations that arise come across as genuine. At times this movie gets a little sappy but for the most part its edited well enough not to draw any of those moments out.

There is no reason at all for a single straight guy to see this movie by himself. So why did I do this you ask? Apparently I like to do fruity things from time to time like watching the movie Brown Sugar 20 times or blaring an SWV album at full volume. Plus hooking up with your hot friend's sister has always been a point of interest for me. Anyway, I rate this movie as kind of FRESH and this is a date movie that both parties in the couple can enjoy.

  1. I need to see this. I freaking love Rosemarie Dewitt. Next to Toni Collette - who is um. A GODDESS - she carried United States of Tara. A show I'm still royally pissed off at Showtime about.
